Fellow classmate Marvin Westfall retired November 29. Having known Marv for 45 years, I always thought he was a long haired hippie. What I did not know is that Marv repeatedly donates his hair to Locks of Love which provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. Now how cool is that!!!!!!!!

Yea, that is right, just got the first system last Christmas. Unfortunately, summer is not good for me since we have two race cars (down from three)(Sharon asked we sell one) for getting back to town. Now that we know this is here, will visit often. See Ya!!!

Classmates: the March Newsletter has finally been posted. My iMac died last week and gathering up all my software & passwords for my new one has consumed all my time (the dog also ate my homework!). Everyone will enjoy reading Betty's story this month. Susan & I both thank Betty for sharing. Next month's newsletter will be MUCH later unless we get more volunteers. Susan & I have revised our question sheet and it can be downloaded from the newsletter page by my picture. You don't have to answer each question, just answer the questions you would like to answer.

Loved the January newletter. It was fun to learn more about the "plant" and trigger some old memories. I had totally forgotten about corning. I'm sure my family will find that intriging like they did the mormon flies. My mom once saved a mormon fly to show my husband and daughter. Just wasn't the same without the smell.

Entry by: Dennis Neal
Dated: Jan 08 2011

Thanks for memory of "corning". Did that a few times back in the day. I have to change the way I say things so people here can know what I am talking about. Lightning bugs (fire flies) mormon flies (may flies) and of course no one knows where Warshington D. C. is? or understand ending sentences with prepositions is more descriptive!

Entry by: Dave Gahn
Dated: Jan 08 2011

Julie is right. When I tell people in Minnesota, about "corning" , they roll their eyes and say something rude about Iowa. Those of us that grew up in the Manor and went to Flint Hills grade school, had a corn field next to the playground. Made it easy to grab some "ammo" at recess. We thought it was more fun and less destructive than "soaping" windows, which is another prank folks outside of Burlington don't seem to understand. Same issues with "Catfish dinners" , Breaded Tenderloins, and what really floors them is fried Cauliflower. Can tell you this though, when I share a bag of Sterzing's with friends, they are "hooked" for life. We were privileged really.

Entry by: Julie Benson Hayek
Dated: Jan 07 2011

In the January newsletter, which is fabulous, one of our classmates mentions corning. I have never met anyone from another community who has heard of it or done it. Was this unique to the Burlington area? Did anyone hear of their father doing it? sounds like something my Dad and my Uncle would do. It rubbed our fingers raw shucking, but I loved it.

That was my call Betty. I prefixed 3 names with Dr. out of personal respect. I was a lackluster student and now very much admire their achievement. Neither Jim, Chris nor Kent used any titles during the reunion and they all went by their first names. They were all fun to talk to & fun to be around. Come to think of it, absolutely everyone I have talked to or met from our class, has done very well. It reflects proudly upon our class. Start planning a trip back for our reunion in 2015 Betty. You will have a blast.

First of all I think that Rex and Susan do a great job with the newletter and everything else they do for the Class of 1970. I live in Oregon and have never been able to attend any of the reunions so it was really fun to see the pictures of the last reunion. But I was just curious about one thing...why was it necessary to put doctor in front of James Wamsley and the other guy? There were no "titles" in front of anyone else's name. It just left me with the impression that just because they are doctors that they are somehow more important?

Burlington is expecting to crest at about 19'+ on Thursday. Parking lot flooding is all that is expected on the Iowa side. Illinois is threatening to close US34 if the river reaches 20' as they are afraid the levy will not hold. I am assigning the blame for this on Dave Gahn, Joe & Cheryl Meese, Julie Benson and Barbara Andersen. This is the result of the heavy rain you guys had --- not us!!! Please don't flush your toilets.

So eastern Iowa is all over the news this morning, with reports of flooding. I quickly checked the Hawkeye on-line and see that the river is expected to crest in Burlington on Thursday night, at 18.7 feet. Anybody how that impacts Dennis and Muddy's?

I love reading about the different classmates in the monthly newsletters. It seems that I am frequently surprised by some of the stories. I guess I just tend to imagine people the way they were 40 years ago. I just finished reading the November issue. Who would have thought Scott Roberts would become a cop? On a more serious note, so sorry to hear about the diagnosis for Craig Bartimus.

Great pictures, and like the rest, stirring up great memories. I remember having assignments to go to Crapo Park to find what seemed like dozens of leaves from dozens of different trees, so we could paste to some construction paper with little labels.  Thanks Barbara, Connie & Susan. I should have labeled the pictures. The red building is Starr's Cave Nature Center. Today was the perfect day. I grabbed the grandkids and took them hiking again so I added a few more pictures tonight. A 2-year old & a 7-year old was too much to handle by myself at Lake Geode last week (we lost one shoe in the lake) so I only took them hiking through Aspen Grove. Even the most rundown streets in Burlington look pretty today. If you look on Facebook, you will see Fall pictures taken by Marcia & Tricia that I am really jealous of!

Rex, I just read the news letter about YOU! Do you have a "home/overpass" down south for the winter months? The winter salt spray coming off the Hwy 534 overpass is tough on Macbooks and keeping a battery charged in cold weather is tough!

It is official! The 40th Class reunion for BHS Class of 1970 is being planned. While we do have a tenatative date, we will wait a little longer until we have a definite location locked in to reveal the date. How this for starters, it will be in the summer of 2010! The next planning meeting will be April 30, at 6:00 pm at Big Muddys. Please join us to help plan this great event. Marcia Glasgow and Sandy Booten will be leading our site logistics team. Shayla McBride and Sue Wolford will be teaming to organize registration and marketing. Jeff Rucker will be our treasurer; he and Chuck Griffin will organize a golf outing. We have some surprises for event entertainment and at this time we have two classmates that are considering heading this team. Anyone that would like to join in can let Chuck know or any of those listed above. Or just come to the next meeting April 30. We are open to receive any and all ideas to help make this Your Event. Be watching for that summer date in 2010!!!!

Again, Rex, awesome job on this website (and not just because I was the featured classmate in the February newsletter! Kent....I did not know that you didn't actually graduate with us.  A bit of Burlington trivia: Arizona Superbowl Quarterback, Kurt Warner was born June 22, 1971 in Burlington, Iowa. His mother's maiden name was Sue Lingenfelter and grew up on Dehner Street. Her parents, Otis & Dolly, owned the Otis's A&W Root Beer stand on Roosevelt. Sue lives in Cedar Rapids and her parents live in Minnesota. If I remember correctly, Sue graduated from Notre Dam.

Your addition of the Tribute to BHS Military Veterans, sons & daughters on our website is absolutely wonderful! We are so fortunate to have these men and women who have made a sacrifice to help in providing all of us the freedom that we have in our great United States of America. I will see what I can do to help get the word out to our classmates to send in their information on themselves and their sons and daughters. Thanks for all your work and your military service, Rex.

We lost a son, PFC Jesse A Givens in Iraq on 5-1-03, if you get a chance check out http://www.fallenheroesmemorial.com/oif/profiles/givensjessea.html and look for PFC Jesse A Givens & you can read about him. He was a good man, father, and son. We miss him terribly. His son Carson, was born 27 days after his death. We vist them in Colorado every summer...our youngest son Joel, is a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer for the past 3 years. He played football for Northwest Missouri State as an offensive lineman..had opportunity to go pro..but wanted to serve his country here in the states.  Hi Cheryl. I'm always looking for more school pictures to restore. If you find yours, please email them to me at beetner@msn.com or mail them to my home address and I will return them. 300 dpi works best. I have had all of our generation's printed as 11 X 14" prints. The picture I used of Perkins School was damaged and poor quality. I'd love to redo it with a cleaner original scan. Thanks and tell Kenny Hello.

I started looking at this website earlier this week and I haven't stopped yet. It's wonderful!! I'm having the best time looking at all the grade school pics of everyone. I'm a little disappointed that there was only one of Perkins school. Are there more somewhere? If you need them, I have most of them somewhere. Kenny and I moved to Topeka, Kansas in 2004 and I'm still unearthing things I haven't seen in years. I'll look for them if you would like to use them. Great job Rex.

I just got the website info from John Williams and it's been very entertaining to see all of the grade school and high school photos from way back when.  Fellow Classmates: Sassy Susan Harper Wolford made me add as many of the missing pictures on the BHS 1970 roster as possible. She is every bit as mean as Shayla! New pictures have now been added. I've gathered missing pictures from the 1968 & 1969 Pathfinder yearbook for students that did not have senior pictures in the 1970 yearbook. If you see any errors, please let me know before Susan beats me up again.

Shayla was on Captain Ernie's? Celebrity will make you do strange things. I would not take it too hard Rex the pain will go away someday. Until then carry a kerchief for the drool.

Entry by: Rex Beetner
Dated: Mar 09 2008

Yes, Hal, it does get pretty messy when I smell food or when I dose off at work. That's still not a reason for Shayla to confuse the image of my dog on the home page with my face. That dog drools way more then I do. Shayla is still as mean to me as she was when I met her at North Hill School. I used to be sweet on her until she made it big on Captain Ernie's Cartoon Showboat. Show biz went to her head and she has been making fun of me ever since. Even at my age it still hurts!

Entry by: Hal Geren

Great job Rex. I don't remember you having a drooling problem. Is this a recent development? At our age we tend to forget small details.

Entry by: Rex Beetner
Dated: Feb 28 2008

Just added a senior picture selection box to the web site (no, I didn't say senior citizen). Some of the pictures may need more photoshop improvements. Yearbook pictures are grainy and are hard to scan. If a senior picture was not available, I used a picture from the junior year. If I have left anyone out, please let me know. If you have any old pictures of yourselves, classmates, schools or of Burlington, please email them to me.

Just so everyone knows what kind of a girl Shayla Gerdner McBride really is: She told me that I look just like the dog on the bottom of the home page. While it is true that both the dog & I have a drooling problem, I assure you that the picture is of my dog and not me. Shayla still treats me like she did when I met her 45-years ago.
